Google Expands Wearables Lineup With $180 Fitbit Edge to Boost Digital Health

The launch underscores the tech giant’s broader effort to drive adoption of its subscription-based Google Health ecosystem while solidifying its footprint in digital health monitoring. The new device replaces the Fitbit Charge 6, introducing a refreshed hybrid design alongside hardware enhancements, including a modular architecture with a replaceable battery. Featuring an expanded display, improved location tracking, and broader contextual activity recognition, the Edge is positioned as a middle ground within Google’s hardware matrix, positioned between the screenless Fitbit Air and the higher-end Pixel Watch flagship lineup.

Beyond hardware updates, Google is leveraging the device to expand its high-margin recurring services revenue through Google Health Premium. Edge buyers receive three months of free access to the $10-per-month platform, which offers generative artificial intelligence coaching and advanced proactive monitoring tools, including trend analysis for metrics such as insulin resistance and blood pressure. The product launch arrives alongside broader software integrations for the Google Health platform.

The company announced expanded data-sharing partnerships with digital health and nutrition providers, including Abbott, Flo Health, MyFitnessPal, and Function Health, as tech conglomerates race to consolidate consumer health data. With pre-orders opening immediately ahead of an October 27 retail rollout, the Fitbit Edge reinforces Google’s strategy of using targeted hardware entry points to build a connected health and software subscription pipeline. Investors are likely to watch how effectively the company converts hardware buyers into long-term software subscribers against sustained market competition from rival Apple.
