All-electric Mercedes ‘grand limousine’ launched with 435-mile range, ultra luxury

Mercedes-Benz is officially carving out a completely new vehicle segment with the introduction of its all-electric VLE. Described as the first “grand sedan,” the VLE aims to combine the best features of two traditionally distinct vehicle types.

It blends the versatility and spacious cabin design of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) with the sharp handling, agility, and premium driving comfort expected of a classic Mercedes-Benz sedan.

“Our grand limousine for up to eight people is exceptionally spacious, intelligent, and efficient, and impresses with remarkable agility and comfort on long journeys,” said Thomas Klein, Head of MercedesBenz Vans.

Vehicle operating system enables advanced artificial intelligence The vehicle runs on the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which supports over-the-air updates to add functions without workshop visits.

This platform enables SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems and powers an updated MBUX Virtual Assistant, which uses generative multi-agent AI to process complex conversations and retain user preferences.

The VLE consumes less than 20 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers (62 miles), which is equivalent to approximately two liters of diesel fuel.

Powered by an 800-volt electrical architecture and a battery with a usable capacity of 115 kWh, the vehicle achieves a total driving range of over 700 kilometers (435 miles) and can add 355 kilometers (220 miles) of range (WLTP) in 15 minutes.

The cabin accommodates up to eight adults across three rows of full-size seats. The manually adjustable seats feature four integrated casters and a “Roll & Go” system that allows them to be slid, locked, or removed and rolled out of the vehicle.

Electrically adjustable variants can be controlled via a dedicated smartphone app or the central dashboard display. The standard VLE measures 5,309 mm in length and provides nearly 800 liters of cargo volume behind its three rows.

Removing the manual seats expands the total cargo capacity to 4,078 liters. Mercedes-Benz plans to release a longer version of the vehicle in 2027, which will feature an overall length of 5,484 mm to provide additional interior space.

For maneuverability and ride quality, the vehicle is equipped with a seven-degree rear-axle steering system, resulting in a curb-to-curb turning circle of 10.9 meters. It also features AIRMATIC air suspension with a 40 mm level control function to manage ride height and dampening over varying road surfaces.

The dashboard features three digital screens housed behind a single glass surface. This setup includes a 10.25- inch (26 cm) instrument cluster for the driver, a 14-inch (35.6 cm) central infotainment display, and a dedicated 14-inch (35.6 cm) display for the front passenger to access independent video streaming, gaming, and applications.

The VLE is equipped with dual electric sliding doors with retractable windows and optional hands-free operation, alongside a separately opening rear window for quick cargo access. Select center console configurations allow an open walkway from the front cockpit to the rear seats.

Available interior upgrades include an electric Grand Comfort seat equipped with adjustable armrests, calf and lumbar support, a massage function, wireless charging, and an integrated cushion.
