Canada Invests $195m To Advance Quantum Manufacturing

The Canadian government is investing $195 million in Toronto-based quantum technology company, Xanadu, to expand its R&D operations and build advanced quantum manufacturing capabilities. The investment was announced by Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon, who is also the minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.
Provided through the Strategic Response Fund (SRF), the funding forms part of Xanadu’s $893 million Project OPTIMISM, which will establish new facilities for developing, manufacturing, assembling and testing the photonic and semiconductor components used in quantum computing. The project will transform a 158,000-square-foot Toronto site into a combined research, development and manufacturing facility called Inception.
The site is expected to feature specialised photonics infrastructure, including cleanrooms, high-precision equipment and dedicated testing and measurement facilities. The investment is expected to create 275 high-quality jobs while expanding Canada’s domestic capacity to manufacture quantum technologies.
It will also support partnerships between Xanadu, Canadian research institutions and small and medium-sized businesses as the country seeks to build a stronger quantum technology supply chain. Solomon believes the investment will propel Canada in the global quantum industry: “Canada is home to some of the world’s leading quantum researchers, innovators and companies. “Strategic investments like this one help transform Canadian breakthroughs into globally competitive businesses, strengthen our quantum ecosystem and create high-value jobs here at home. “Quantum technologies will be one of the foundational technologies of the 21st century.
By supporting advanced manufacturing and commercialisation in Canada, we are helping ensure that Canada remains a global leader in quantum innovation and that more of the economic benefits of that leadership are created here at home.” The project will give Xanadu new capabilities covering several stages of quantum manufacturing, from integrating individual photonic components to assembling complete quantum modules.

The facility is also expected to have dedicated testing and measurement infrastructure operating around the clock. These capabilities are intended to address one of the industry’s central challenges: moving quantum hardware beyond laboratory prototypes and towards repeatable, scalable manufacturing.
The site will use specialised equipment and tooling from a number of technology suppliers, including ASMPT, Bluefors, DISCO, EVG, FiconTEC, and MPI. Xanadu plans to use the facility’s Systems Integration and Operation Centre to assemble, test and verify quantum modules before they are incorporated into server racks. Welcoming the government’s support, founder and chief executive officer of Xanadu, Dr Christian Weedbrook described the agreement as a major milestone for the company and for Canada’s ambition to lead in quantum technology and advanced manufacturing.
