The Super Eagles of Nigeria finally departed for South Africa on Sunday morning after days of uncertainty caused by aviation authorities withholding a landing permit for their chartered flight.
The issue was resolved at the last minute, allowing the Nigerian contingent to land in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup African Qualifier (Matchday 8) clash against the Bafana Bafana.
The team will hold their final training session on Monday before Tuesday’s high-stakes game at the Toyota Stadium, Bloemfontein, scheduled for 16:00 GMT. Group C Standings: South Africa – 16 points; Benin Republic – 11 points; Nigeria – 10 points; Rwanda – 9 points; Lesotho – 6 points; Zimbabwe – 4 points.
Nigeria’s 1–0 victory over Rwanda in Uyo on Saturday lifted them to third place, keeping their qualification hopes alive. With only group winners guaranteed a ticket to the 2026 World Cup, Tuesday’s clash is a must-win for the Super Eagles.
The team will be without talismanic striker Victor Osimhen, who is sidelined by injury. In his absence, manager Eric Chelle is expected to turn to Tolu Arokodare, Saturday’s match-winner, to lead the attack.
